Deploys .NET Architecture to Build Secure Single Source for Employee News Online
, March 3, 2003 - Miller Systems, one of Boston’s premier technology consulting firms specializing in web engineering and IT consulting, today announced the successful launch of a new employee portal for Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc., the largest provider of environmental services in North America. Supporting 4,000 employees and business line managers, Miller Systems worked with Clean Harbors to create a widely available, easily accessible single online source for employee news using Microsoft’s .NET framework.
“Our goal was to build a secure, yet convenient, easy to manage portal for delivering employee applications and dynamic employee news,” said David Proud, Vice President of E-commerce, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. “Thanks to Miller Systems’ technical expertise, content organization and management philosophies, and the team’s understanding of Microsoft’s Active Directory and .NET, we were able to create a new employee news portal based on existing human resources infrastructure with both static content and dynamic applications.”
Clean Harbors is the largest provider of comprehensive environmental services in North America with a diversified customer base that includes a majority of the Fortune 500, thousands of smaller private entities, and numerous governmental agencies. With facilities spread all over the United States and Canada, including locations in Puerto Rico and Mexico, and fueled by a recent acquisition that tripled its size, Clean Harbors needed a centralized place where its 4,000 employees could go to access their applications, news, and human resource materials. Miller Systems was charged with building an updated news distribution source for employees, as well as an elegant browser interface to help business line and human resource managers manage news content. Needing to integrate the new system with valuable employee data locked in existing Active Directory and PeopleSoft applications, Miller Systems built Clean Harbors’ Employee Portal using Microsoft’s .NET framework. Doing so allowed Miller Systems and Clean Harbors to build a secure, tightly integrated, scalable system.
Because of the targeted nature of the content and audience, a site wide content management system was not warranted, making Miller Systems’ own award- winning dataDriver Press Room technology the ideal solution for Clean Harbors. Replicating dataDriver Press Room existing product functionality in a .NET web services architecture, Miller Systems enabled managers to add, edit, and publish news content to the Employee Portal by using a simple and powerful browser interface. As part of delivering and managing content, Miller Systems worked with Clean Harbors to integrate the portal with Active Directory and PeopleSoft, ensuring permission based, personalized news access for each employee based on infrastructure already established by the human resources department. By helping to define and identify potential security issues, Miller Systems guaranteed a smooth and secure migration to Active Directory for the Employee Portal.
“This project exemplifies the value we have always placed on the well balanced combination of rich technical expertise and common sense business savvy,” said Seth Miller, Founder, President and CEO of Miller Systems, Inc. “By understanding the business requirements, applying our knowledge of web services, and leveraging our extensive experience in news content management via dataDriver Press Room, we were able to build Clean Harbors an integrated portal where hundreds of mission-critical applications simultaneously reside alongside critical company news on the web.”
