“Thanks to Miller Systems’ technical expertise, content organization and management philosophies, and the team’s understanding of Microsoft’s Active Directory and .NET, we were able to create a new employee news portal based on existing human resources infrastructure with both static content and dynamic applications.”

Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc.

Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (Nasdaq: CLHB) is the largest provider of comprehensive environmental services in North America with a diversified customer base that includes a majority of the Fortune 500, thousands of smaller private entities, and numerous governmental agencies. With facilities spread all over the United States and Canada, including locations in Puerto Rico and Mexico, and fueled by a recent acquisition that tripled its size, Clean Harbors needed a centralized source where its 4,000 employees could go to access their applications, news, and human resource materials.

When Miller Systems embarked on this project, Clean Harbors had no elegant, simple way to manage news content internally or externally and was not able to control automatic dissemination of audience-specific content, such as manager-only communications. Moreover, Clean Harbors was in the process of acquiring a division of SafetyKleen and its roughly 2,000 employees, and lacked an effective means of communicating with them. In the meantime, hundreds of applications on a variety of incongruent platforms were in use across all of Clean Harbors' business units, plants and facilities. What's more, without a framework or uniform user interface, employees lacked centralized, security-specific access to critical applications. Supporting all employees and business line managers, Miller Systems worked with Clean Harbors to meet these requirements and create a widely available, easily accessible portal using Microsoft's .NET framework.

Miller Systems' challenge in building this single online source was three-fold, beginning with the strict time limitation associated with the completion of the SafetyKleen acquisition: the new employee portal needed to be ready on or before the date the acquisition closed. Next, Miller Systems needed to establish an elegant content management framework that would be easy for non-technical personnel to update and manage. And finally, Miller Systems needed to integrate it all with Clean Harbors' existing IT infrastructure to ensure secure, personalized access to information for all levels of employees.

TECHNOLOGIES USED:
1. Microsoft .NET
2. PeopleSoft
3. Active Directory
4. SQL Server
5. dataDriver PressRoom
Paying close attention to Clean Harbors' established brand standards, Miller Systems designed and implemented an employee communication framework. This framework would power an employee "dashboard" for launching business critical applications used on a daily basis. In order to ensure employee-specific application security, Miller Systems worked closely with Clean Harbors' IT and development staff to integrate this dashboard with existing PeopleSoft, Active Directory and other custom databases. By integrating application and content security with these databases, Miller Systems enabled Clean Harbors to define access privileges according to existing, pertinent information such as employees' position, job title, region, and facility type. Finally, to ensure the maintenance and delivery of personalized, secure news content to employees, Miller Systems leveraged its acclaimed dataDriver PressRoom technology, extending its content management functionality using Microsoft's .NET Framework.

Completed in time for the SafetyKleen acquisition, the Clean Harbors employee portal was able to serve as a "Welcome Wagon" for over 2,000 new employees. The Clean Harbors' portal provides employees with a well-designed online resource where personalized news and applications can be accessed via an extensible framework. With elegant administration of news content, it also provides those responsible for content management with controls over delivery according to location, job title, and facility type. Using .NET, Clean Harbors' new corporate standard, Miller Systems seamlessly integrated existing IT resources, Active Directory and PeopleSoft, with the employee portal to deliver secure access to employee-specific content. With easy to navigate, directed content and applications, Clean Harbors' employee portal has centralized and streamlined access to important information, and has ultimately helped to increase employee awareness and productivity.
